Part 2 - The devil is in the details.
It's true. The devil IS in the details. First of all, I need to ask your forgiveness for making yesterday's (or Sunday's) blog post the longest stinkin' blog post title in history. Next time, I'll try to find a way to shorten it. For the continuation of these posts, I'll just call them what they are. So let's get back to the topic at hand.
Question- do you believe what I just said? Do you think details are all that important? I think some of you would answer that by saying that it depends on what we're talking about. I'd say you have a point, but I'm not gonna let you off that easy. Details really are important in almost everything. Disagree? Think about this:
-Details are what make a picture or painting come to life
-Details are typically how you get screwed over in rental agreements, cell phone contracts, etc.
-The smallest detail in html or CSS can change the look of an entire page on a website.
-Detailed instructions come with almost any household appliance you buy.
-Details are what got lost in the mix right before the 1986 space shuttle challenger explosion.
-Details suggest that you move your golf club 1 millimeter to change over 4 inches per yard on where your ball will land.
Still think details aren't all that important? Think again! Without paying attention to details, you really can miss out on a huge opportunity to give and do your best. Every week at Waters Edge Church, we spend literally hours discussing details on seemingly small things. We've found that small things tend to have the biggest impact. It could be the difference in a use of a color, or how long a worship set will be. What a song or opening segment should look like. Who are we trying to impact the most? What would an outsider think? What would the common person want to experience? Who knows? If we can think about it, or if it can be discussed, we hash it out, then RE-HASH it, just to make sure it's the right thing to do.
My wife thinks details are important, and I'd bet if you ask your spouse, they would too! As we did our budget tonight, we changed a few small details in our expenditures and found that by making a few small adjustments and compromises, we would be able to hit a financial goal in 13 months, instead of 22. We focused on the details to make sure we're doing all that we can do before asking God to do what we can't do for ourselves. Speaking of spouses, when is the last time that you took the initiative, in great DETAIL, to make sure they had a great date, a fun night out, or even a special gift? When is the last time that you paid attention to the details in your company? Your checking statement? Ok, I'm gonna stop writing because this is getting a little too convicting.
To sum it up- Want to do what YOU can do for God, and then ask him to do what you can't do for yourself? Don't leave out the details. Details matter. They matter to people, and they matter to God. Don't leave them out. You could miss an amazing opportunity. We'll look at part 3 tomorrow.
What are some details that you could focus on more?
